I do not believe that there is anything unethical about the genetic engineering of humans.  All I see it as is a way to improve upon ourselves and therefor would it not also improve every other aspect of our lives?  Would it not improve our society?  And if something can help people by curing hereditary diseases and other genetic conditions, isn?t it unethical to ban or to limit it?
I am talking about genetic engineering, I am not talking about embryonic stemcell research as Legallyblond seems to think.  And I am not talking about cloning.  Someone wrote down Gattaca.  That is an excellent movie and anyone who wants to know what I mean by genetic engineering of humans should watch that movie.  It will give you a good idea and also make you think about a lot of things.

It's considered unethical simply because nature didn't "program" us that way. The way we are born is concerned "normal" and anything that we do to alter the way we are, is currently considered unethical.

The unethical part is the use of human embryos to do this research. Many people feel this manipulation of potential human life is horrendous. These embryos could have been the next Michael Jordan, the next Albert Einstein, etc., but instead they are being manipulated to help the disabled/ sick people alive today. I feel that we must move forward to help these people, however, I don't think the help should come in the form of destroyed embryos.

the church will tell you that it is wrong because only God can create life.

others will say that it is wrong because the "clone" could be used as an organ bank and will therefore be the death of the engineered person.

others will say that it will start up a whole new "race" and therefore will suffer from racism.

and then there are the lawyers who will say to not do it, then do it, then file lawsuits and become the only winners of the genetic war.

What is unethical is letting women with less than a three digit IQ bring babies into the world.  If you have to have a drivers license to drive a car, you should have to have a license to have a child.  I agree that it would be great to not have diseases or genetic conditions.  I was lucky to be born healthy.  I can eat anything and I am not alergic to anything.  We have already mapped the entire gene code of humans.  It's just a matter of time.  Stupid politics will kill us.

thats a rather open question. it will gt mixed answers because i dont think everyone will take it the same way that you ment it. ill give you my opinion though..

growing human parts is good for medical purposes, such as replacing a failing heart or other tissue.

if you mean it as changing ones own genetic code, then it may be possable for a murderer to escape prosicution because the DNA evidance didnt fit the person.

if you mean cloning, id say...the created PRODUCT wouldnt be able to live a normal life like you and i. just think about it.

i am all for genetic engineering humans but there are some traits that should be limited like physical features. if we could customize our own children's physical features many of them would look the same cuz people would look at another kid and say" oh, i like how they made him/her lets go with that look." so you wouldnt want that to happen. Some of the good things is we could elimanate diseases that are passed through genes and we could speed the evolution of man kind by long shot.
