I've been doing some research and haven't found an answer that's helped me to understand so hopefully someone else can! Thanks so much for whoever tries Slight Smile

a. Why are the long tract neurons on the outside of your spinal chord myelinated?

b. Why are the interneurons in the center of your spinal chord not myelinated?

Thanks again!

Myelin's primary function is to significantly increase the speed with which the impulse travels. Compare it to the insulation on an electric wire. It allows impulses to jump by saltation rather than travel in waves.

Myelin Sheath is not necessary on interneurons as these neurons simply 'process' and are quite short the impulse. But it is found on most sensory and motor neurons as they are very long and need to transmit impulses rapidly.
