How are human mitochondria inherited?

    as linear DNA
    from the mother only
    as an X-linked trait
    without DNA
    from the father only
I know the answer is "from the mother only" but why?
Can someone explain why and how this happens?
I'm interested in details.  Slight Smile

It's really simple. It occurs when the sperm fertilizes the egg.

Where is the mitochondria of the sperm? It's in the tail, and the tail is rarely ever inserted into the egg.

With this being said, male mitochondrial DNA can get in, but it is fairly rare.
