A nurse engaged in primary prevention for substance abuse among adolescents could advise par-ents to:

  1. Forbid TV and movies with violent content
  2. Remind teens that they are not old enough to participate in adult pleasures
  3. Excuse rule breaking as kids will be kids behavior
  4. Help teens anticipate pressures and teach effective coping skills

Learning coping skills (option 4) will assist teens to resist substances. Forbidding TV (option 1), discussing substances as adult pleasures (option 2), and excusing rule breaking (option 3) will not necessarily prevent substance abuse.
