if the therapeutic index is defined as the ratio of toxicity to the host to the therapeutic value of host, then why is a higher therapeutic index preferable? higher index means greater toxicity value to the host..

Not familiar with the therapeutic index. According to the internet, quantitatively, it is the ratio given by the lethal or toxic dose divided by the therapeutic dose. The higher the therapeutic index, the safer or more efficacious the treatment modality. The way I see it is in order to get a high TI value, your therapeutic dose needs to be very small in relation to the toxic dose.
