The pros are fairly straightforward - a small piece of the environment is saved, and hopefully some of the species of wildlife it contains.

However, the danger is that the buffer zone of habitat around the edge is devalued and no longer looked upon as important. Habitat degradation and development then marches right up to the edge.

People's attitude can change - they think that the job of conservation is done.

Also, it is unlikely that the reserves are large enough to support sustainable populations of various species.

We need a good network of reserves, good corridors of habitat to allow free movement of wildlife and better general environmental protection for all areas.

Without them, there would be more and smaller populations, making them less stable and more prone to genetic drift.
