My textbook states that there is a general trade-off between a species' stress tolerance and its competitive ability along gradients of resource availability. Why does a trade-off exist? I figured the more stress-tolerant a species is, the better its competitive ability. Is that not the case? If so, why not? Thanks in advance for your help!  Smiling Face with Open Mouth
