To view an individual gene, you can either work forward or backwards. Working forward entails sequencing the genome of an organism (let's say a human), then locating a sequence, isolating the gene, inserting it into bacteria where the gene will be expressed into protein. The backwards approach would be to isolate a protein, find out its amino acid sequence, and then decode the amino acid sequence into its raw nucleotide sequence. Then, compare the nucleotides with the organism's genome.
