d. Low doses (as low as 40 mg but up to 81 mg or 325 mg daily) of aspirin inhibits platelet aggregation and prolongs bleeding time, while high doses (arthritis doses 3 to 6 g per day) may have no effect or shorten bleeding time because high doses prevent the formation of prostacyclin. This is the reason that an 81 mg aspirin is the usual dose in the prophylaxis of stroke and heart attacks.
