The gingival epithelium consists of the oral epithelium, sulcular epithelium, and junctional epithelium. It is avascular and does not contain blood vessels or lymphatics. The oral epithelium functions to protect the underlying structure and acts as a mechanical barrier. The oral epithelium is parakeratinized, the sulcular epithelium is less keratinized, and the junctional epithelium is nonkeratinized. Underlying the epithelium is the vascular gingival connective tissue (lamina propria), which is composed of collagen.
