Bariatric surgeries can be either restrictive or malabsorptive. In restrictive surgeries the total amount of food that can be consumed is limited physically. An example of this is the lap band surgery, in which a band is placed around part of the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. In malabsorptive surgeries, such as the Roux-En-Y gastric bypass, portions of the stomach and small intestine are bypassed, meaning that the total food intake is restricted, but also the amount of absorption is decreased because of the reduced amount of absorptive structure the food comes in contact with. Nutritional deficiencies are more common following a restrictive bariatric surgery procedure than a malabsorptive surgical procedure.
