Suppose that 40% of all meioses in mainland-island hybrids involve recombination somewhere in the chromosome region between q2.1 and p2. What percentage of the gametes of hybrid deer are viable?

It would be 80%. Use 100 as your number of gametes (it's nice and easy). If 40% recombine, that means 60/100 are normal and produce normal offspring. Of the 40% that recombine, only half would be viable. Half of 40 is 20. So this means in total you would have 20+60=80% that are viable.
