A homogeneous distributed database is where the data is distributed, but all database copies use the same DBMS system and thus can function from a single global schema definition.

A heterogeneous distributed database is where the data is distributed and may also use distinct DBMSs. Since the DBMSs are distinct, there may be both global and local users with different schema definitions.
