A monitor detects and records resource utilization. Monitors can be hardware or software based. Hardware monitors are generally attached directly to a hardware device or to the communication channel connecting a peripheral device to the rest of the computer. This type of monitor measures and records device or channel activity. A software monitor is generally incorporated into the OS. It records requests for specific high or low-level OS services.
