I've been debating with a friend about why dating/relationships play such a major role in the high school social landscape. He explains it as a result of desire for conformity, whereas I explain it as a result of biochemical processes in the body associated with puberty. Is there any empirical evidence supporting either viewpoint?

Thanks,

You're both right, but you can argue that the need to feel validated by society to conform to societal norms is biochemical in its nature. In fact, we gravitate towards survival and reproduction. Dating and possessing relationships increases those two values.
