Smaller gauge needles can be used to administer blood products, if necessary. However, they necessitate using a slower infusion rate and run the risk of clogging. The client is a young, otherwise healthy man who should have veins that are neither fragile nor small. Although a large gauge needle could also be used, its use is not likely to dramatically improve the rate of blood flow (and this is not now an emergent situation) and it is more likely to mechanically damage the vein.
