I would like to know on why mass of fungus gnat larvae behaviors this way.

I would say it keeps in moisture, because larvae are susceptible to drying out if they were individual moving.

I read about this in an article. Apparently, these tiny creatures signify their dominance by migrating in large groups, since it enables them to avoid predators that might mistaken them as a snake.
