How is the energy released from catabolism coupled to anabolism?
 a. Catabolism is mostly oxidative; therefore, no energy is released in this process.
  b. Anabolism and catabolism share pathways and transfer energy from each process through common metabolic intermediates.
  c. The oxidative reactions of catabolism reduce NAD+ and NADP+ to NADH and NADPH. The oxidation of NADH generates ATP. ATP and NADPH fuel the reactions of anabolism.
  d. The end products of catabolism, water, carbon dioxide, and ammonia act as reductants in anabolism and provide the energy required for biosynthesis.
  e. Hydride ions are released in the oxidative reactions of catabolism and are directly coupled to the endergonic, reduction reactions of anabolism.
