There are many parts to the knee that are subject to misalignment or damage. The knee is a major load-bearing hinge joint. It is built to only bend in one plane, but it is also subjected to stress that can tend to bend the knee in a direction it is not designed to bend. When this happens, some of the many ligaments in the knee can tear. The patella is a bone that does not bear weight but is present to lend structure to the knee joint. The patella can also be pushed out of proper alignment in an injury. The cartilage of the knee can wear out over time as well.
