Decreased surfactant production in the preterm lung is a problem because surfactant:
 
  a. causes increased permeability of the alveoli.
  b. provides transportation for oxygen to enter the blood supply.
  c. keeps the alveoli open during expiration.
  d. dilates the bronchioles, decreasing airway resistance.
