Sure, genetic screening is process by which an individual’s DNA is scanned for genetic mutations.

Genetic screening is the detection of mutations known to be associated with genetic disorders before they manifest themselves in an individual. For example, mutations in the gene for Huntington’s chorea can now be detected before the symptoms of the disease surface. Although an effective treatment has yet to be developed, individuals with a family history of the disease can now choose to find out if they will develop it later on in life.

Genetic disorders in the human fetus can also be detected using genetic screening of embryonic cells found in the amniotic fluid during gestation. Such prenatal screens are available for hemophilia, phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis, and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. Couples with a family history of genetic disorders who are at risk of passing mutations on to their offspring are offered genetic counselling to better prepare for the birth of a child.

Genetic screening and detection techniques are limited only by the lack of knowledge in identifying particular genes or associated gene markers. With the success of the Human Genome Project, it is hoped that the location of more genes will be pinpointed, resulting in better screening and detection of genetic disorders. Gene therapy, however, is very much in its infancy; there has been limited success in the treatment of a few diseases. It is still too early to make any far-reaching conclusions.Nevertheless, researchers are optimistic that gene therapy will be a viable medical option in the future.
