The crustaceans have the most numerous species, highest abundance, and most diverse ecological roles. Many of the smaller species feed directly on primary producers; others are important detritovores, thus providing a link to the higher trophic levels. Many species are predators, thus adding complexity to the marine food web. The largest marine species, including the baleen whales, feed on crustaceans. Some such as crabs, shrimp, and lobster are part of the human diet.
