Counter the following argument: Sexual reproduction is just an accident of evolution, once established it is irreversible. We do not need to invoke specific benefits to explain its maintenance.

ANS:
There are recently evolved asexual lineages; due to the twofold costs of sex they should replace sexual populations if it wasn't for benefits offsetting this cost.
