The common mistakes made when attempting to solve problems or make decisions include:

1 . Poorly defining the problem, or denying that a problem even exists
2 . Treating the symptoms rather than the cause; attempts are made to solve or change the situation resulting from the problem, not the problem itself
3 . Not specifying goals and objectives, or not clearly defining them
4 . Not gathering enough information about possible alternatives (solutions)
5 . Not carefully, correctly, or adequately considering and evaluating all possible alternatives
6 . Allowing opinions, emotions, feelings, and self-interest to interfere withand often overrideobjective, rational thought
7 . Jumping to unwarranted conclusions
8 . Becoming paralyzed and taking no action because of fear of making mistakes or making a wrong decision
