You might ask students to actually bring two exams to the next class meeting: one on which they performed well and another on which they performed poorly. They could then consider how their study techniques might have brought about these results. This line of thinking is aligned with an internal locus of control, encouraging students to see that they are more in control of their academic success than they might think.
