Why was rice the staple cereal in Japan? Why was wheat the traditional grain of central Europe?

The amount of naturally occurring rainfall determined the type of grain that would grow in a region. Rice grows in very wet conditions and Japan is prone to heavy rains called monsoons. Wheat requires moderate amounts of rain and grows well in Europe.
