  a. Clamp the needle one quarter the distance from the eye to the point.
  b. Close the ratchet of the needle holder on the first or second ratchet.
  c. Never touch the free end of the suture material when handing it up at the sterile field.

Use a needle holder with appropriately sized jaws for the type of needle being used. Select an appropriately sized needle holder for the area of tissue to be sutured. Clamp the body of the needle in an area one-fourth to one-half the distance from the eye to the point. Close the needle holder on the first or second ratchet. Pass the needle holder with the needle point up and directed toward the surgeon's thumb. Hold the free end of the suture material and guide it while passing the needle holder.
