Gases and small, nonpolar molecules can diffuse freely across the lipid bilayer. Ions and large polar molecules require protein mechanisms to cross the cell membrane:

  • Passive transport proteins (no energy required)
  • Active transport proteins (require an energy expenditure)
  • Endocytosis and exocytosis (bulk movements by these two; endo in and exo out of cell)
