In depolarization the resting membrane potential becomes less negative; where a graded potential became strong enough to reach the threshold becoming an action potential. After the action potential has reached its peak it goes through repolarization to bring the resting membrane potential more negative. In hyperpolarization the resting membrane potential has become too negative and here the resting membrane potential is brought back to stability.
