A short base sequence near an mRNA's poly-A tail is like a zip code that specifies a particular destination. Proteins that attach to the zip code drag the mRNA along cytoskeletal elements to that destination. mRNAs are localized within the cell so that they can be translated near the region where the protein will be used.
