If it takes 40 minutes to replicate the entire E. coli chromosome, how can the cell divide as quickly as every 20 minutes?

Ans: Rounds of DNA replication must be overlapping. If a cell lineage is rapidly dividing, when a particular cell divides, the two segregating chromosomes are already partially replicated.
