Although the total number of human genes (20,000-25,000) is much less than originally predicted (100,000), how many different proteins can be produced?

Ans: Human cells produce about 50,000-60,000 proteins. An early notion was that one gene produced one RNA which produced one protein. However, it is now predicted that as many as 60 of the mRNAs in humans are alternatively spliced to produce slightly different forms of the protein with different functions.
