If the trait is controlled by a gene responsible for synthesizing red pigment, the recessive allele could be a dysfunctional mutant. Red pigment would be made as long as there was at least one functional copy of the gene presentthis is the essence of dominance, where the presence of a single allele is sufficient to mask the recessive allele.
