How can we explain the fact that the human genome contains far fewer genes than was predicted would be necessary for our survival?

Although we currently do not know the complete answer to this question, one partial explanation is that the microorganisms that reside within our bodies help us by synthesizing chemicals, like vitamins, that we then use. This symbiotic relationship may be part of the reason why we have only 20,000 or so genes.
