The general sense of a gambler is often a negative to a community when it is first introduced. Smoke filled rooms with many card players shouting out as they win or lose is an image that many people still carry today. Right or wrong, this is often the impression expressed in public discussions. The casino owners

and senior management must work continually to dispel these myths and misimpressions.

The prevalence of crime is another topic of frequent community discussion. Historically, crime does increase in a community when a casino opens, but so does the overall visitor count. The percentage of new visitors in the area typically increases at a much greater rate than does the increase in crime. It is important to remember that crime increases as population density increases.

The new visitors to the community add more cars on the roads, plus more delivery trucks and service vehicles. The community then frequently needs wider highways or new roads. The cost of these improvements falls upon the community and/or state, which are funded by tax revenues quite often from the casinos. Since most communities don't have highway development funds on reserve, many times a tax increase or bond issuance is necessary.

More street lighting and traffic signals are also often needed to help handle the increase in traffic. While many businesses will provide parking spaces at their storefront locations, as does the casino, the increase in visitors sometimes is greater than the available parking capacity. A common result is that the community must provide more parking to help deal with the issue.

Signage lighting for the casino can have a negative impact upon a community. Bright and large signage is often desired by the casino so as to attract gamblers. It helps to create an atmosphere of fun and energy. And since the casino is open all night (or late into the night, whichever is permitted by law), this bright light may be considered as light pollution by neighbors.

As an entertainment facility, the casino attracts players in the evening and long into the nighttime. The coming and going of vehicles and people generates noise. This constant stream of movement and noise helps create undesirable noise pollution for the community.

The proximity of the casino to schools and churches is often of high concern to community citizens. Typically, town regulations will restrict the distance some types of business can be from locales frequented by children. Casino locations are also usually restricted. Still, the presence of a casino in a community can be very attractive to minors. Therefore, keeping minors out of a casino where they might create problems for themselves is of high concern to the community.
