Gambling and risk taking have been part of human culture since the beginning of recorded history. Early accounts of gambling apparatus date back centuries, with ivory dice recovered from Egyptian tombs made sometime before 1500 B.C.E. The Chinese, Greeks and Romans were also known to practice games of skill and chance for amusement as early as 2300 B.C.E. The American Revolutionary War was funded, in part, by lotteries. American societal standards of tolerance and acceptance and laws related to gambling have swung back and forth over time from prohibition to regulation. Paralleling the expansion and growth of the gaming industry in the late 20th and early 21st centuries has been the growing awareness of and attention to the issue of problem and pathological gambling.

Recurring accounts of gamblers suffering losses are recorded from early times with the behavior labeled as an addiction. Descriptions of what is now clinically described as pathological gambling have been noted in historical accounts of many world cultures. In the first half of the 20th century, psychoanalysts first became interested in gambling as a disorder. Freud, for example, believed gambling was an addiction and that the gambler gambled not for the money but for what is known today as the action.

As gambling in the United States expanded after its legalization in the 1930s, problems associated with it began to garner greater attention exemplified by the first meeting of Gambler's Anonymous, the 12-step self-help fellowship, taking place in 1957 . Gamblers Anonymous' well-known screening questions became the standard used in measuring compulsive gambling behavior and served as the basis for modern classification systems that determine the seriousness of an individual's gambling problem by focusing on its consequences.
