Services provided to customers beyond the casino itself also play important roles in the organization. The casino no longer exerts power over all other departments. In times past, the casino was the center of organizational power within the firm. It called the shots' and made the decisions about what other departments would do to serve selected customers. Today, the casino is still the number one revenue department for the business, but other departments are also important stakeholders. Given the rise in competition for the gaming customer, the marketing department is responsible for bringing customers into the casino. That role gives it strong organizational power today.

Historically, the casino was king of the organization, and the casino manager was the ultimate monarch. This was the standard method of operation through the late 1980s. What the casino manager decided was implemented without question by the entire organization. Around the same time, Steve Wynn opened the Mirage Resort and Casino in 1989, and this perspective became more mainstream. Mr. Wynn announced that he didn't care which cash register was ringing in the casino resort as long as one was ringing. This meant that he had a new perspective for the industry. Rather than viewing the hotel, restaurants, etc., as support functions for the casino, he felt they also should become profit centers.

Hotels rooms were also viewed as a profit center rather than a loss center that supported only the premium casino player. Instead, customers were offered larger, finer hotel rooms at a 4 -star level of service. Fewer customers were routinely and arbitrarily given free meals and hotel rooms. Frequent player systems were created that tracked an individual customer's actual value to the casino, and commensurate rewards awarded. More hotel rooms were made available or sale at market rates rather than being given away to marginal casino gamblers.
