If its relative humidity is 50 and its absolute humidity is 16 mg H2O/L, the water vapor capac-ity of a gas is _____ mg H2O/L.

  a. 0.8 c. 8
  b. 3.2 d. 32

Q. 2  The relative humidity is 40 and the capacity is 32 mg H2O/L. The absolute humidity of this gas is _____ mm Hg.

  a. 1.3 c. 60
  b. 12.8 d. 128

Q. 3  What is the relative humidity when the absolute humidity is 15 mg H2O/L and the capacity of a gas is 20.6 mg H2O/L?

  a. 15 c. 30
  b. 20 d. 72

Q. 4  Which of the following statements is true?

  a. Fog and mist are considered water vapor.
  b. Medical aerosols are much smaller than molecules of water.
  c. Medical aerosols range from 0.2 m to 50 m.
  d. All of the above are true.

Q. 5  A patient is receiving albuterol through a small-volume nebulizer. Where in the body will the greatest effect take place?

(Answer to Q. 1)  ANS: D
0.5 = 16/X.
0.5X = 16.
X = 16/0.5.
X = 32 mg H2O.

(Answer to Q. 2)  ANS: B
RH = (AH/capacity)  100. 40 = 0.4. 0.4 = x/32. 32  0.4 = 12.8 mg H2O/L.

(Answer to Q. 3)  ANS: D
RH = (AH/capacity)  100. (15 mg/L/20.6 mg/L)  100 = 72.

(Answer to Q. 4)  ANS: C
Medical aerosol must deposit anywhere from the upper airways to the lower airways; therefore, it must be the appropriate size for the target site, with a range of 0.2 m to 50 m. Fog and mist are considered aerosols, not water vapor. Medical aerosols need to be larger than water vapor mole-culesotherwise they would be too stable to deposit at their target site.

(Answer to Q. 5)  ANS: D
Aerosols have the potential to cause both local and systemic effects. However, these effects largely depend on the drug concentration delivered, particle size, temperature, and volume of the aerosol.
