After the initial rabies vaccine immunization, the antibody titer in an animal decreases over time, but subsequent yearly exposure to the same antigen causes another memory response. This annual shot is known as a "booster shot." Periodic reimmunization maintains high levels of memory B cells and circulating rabies antibodies, providing long term active protection against rabies diseases.
