Answer to #1

These strategies are operational excellence, product leadership, and customer intimacy. Operational excellence is defined as the ability to deliver services or products smoothly and reliably. This is necessary in some industriescell phone or delivery companies would not get any business without good operations. Product leadership is when companies provide predictably excellent quality in products and services or when they become market leaders by being innovative. Technology companies compete for this by constantly churning out new products. Customer intimacy is when companies know their customers' needs well and try to meet them with unique tailoring. This works very well online.

Answer to #4

First is cost leadership, which is producing goods and services more efficiently than the competition. Companies can do this if they have resources like easy access to plentiful, good raw materials, cheaper labor sources, better information, and so on. The strength of these companies is that they are efficient. Examples are Costco and Priceline.

Second is differentiationattempting to distinguish our products as different from others in the industry. Differentiation may be fostered through excellent quality in products and customer service, distinctive design, exclusivity, value-added bundled into the core purchase, and so on. The strength of these companies is that they are unique. Examples are Giggle stores and Buddhaful.

Finally, focus is a strategy in which companies do one thing very well. This is a very narrow approach, and these companies often serve niche markets. Examples are EB Games and Nunu Chocolates.

Answer to #7

In the General Electric model, two dimensions are measured. They are market attractiveness and business strength. Sub-ratings may also exist within these, such as sales volume, market growth rate, and competitive intensity (for market attractiveness), and market share, brand strength, and unit costs (for business strength.) Each of these also has a weight, which is multiplied by the rating to get a value, which helps us see where our strengths and weaknesses are. This strategic tool forces the marketing manager to make explicit some judgments about the performance of the brand or company as well as the assumptions that the company operates under with respect to expected performance.
