The following are possible explanations: (1) a bacterium lacks the cell structure the antibiotic targets, (2) the antibiotic is impermeable to the bacterium, (3) the antibiotic is inactivated by the bacterium, (4) that antibiotic's target is modified by the bacterium, (5) a resistant biochemical pathway is developed by the bacterium, and (6) the antibiotic is effluxed out of the bacterium.
