Answer to #1

Lack of iron in the diet can reduce the endurance of the athlete. Iron is needed to carry oxygen to the muscles such that they can produce ATP for sustained muscular activity. The muscles will be weaker or will not be able to endure.

Answer to #3

An athlete may want to focus on improving their endurance within their sport. As they eat more nutritious foods and regain their iron stores, protein and muscle mass, they will likely not feel as tired and will be able to perform their sport with less fatigue. A nutritious diet with the goal of enhancing athletic performance should be emphasized over their actual weight.
A female athlete will need to address her body image more in relation to her sport. She will need to become aware of the fact that a skinny physique does not ensure success in her chosen sport. She may want to be made aware of fellow athletes who have more healthy body sizes who are successful athletes.

Answer to #5

Men may need to focus on improving their overall body image and self-confidence as opposed to addressing concerns around the fear of gaining weight. They may not have the cultural pressures to be thin that women have but they need to feel that their self-worth involves more than just their body image and their athletic ability.

Answer to #7

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes a diet of olive oil, lean meats, vegetables, and nuts. Many of these foods have a low glycemic load which means that these foods do not cause a rapid increase in blood glucose levels after ingestion. Fiber in foods also can slow down the absorption of glucose into the blood. This helps to control the swings in blood glucose that many people with diabetes experience.
