Intrinsic motivation can be increased in the classroom if teachers give rewards sparingly, especially on tasks where students seem to express great natural interest.

Intrinsic motivation can be undermined by
a.rewarding performance when interest is high b. using tangible objects to reward performance
c. holding rewards out prior to the task as an incentive
d. forcing students to compete against one another for a limited supply of rewards
