Children who are abused often struggle later with serious adjustment problems, including depression and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. They also have an increased rate of suicide attempts, perhaps due in part to the fact that they are more at risk for problems with alcohol and drugs as they mature. Another devastating consequence is that abused children are more likely to become involved in unhealthy relationships in adulthood. They have not had positive relationship models and don't know how to form healthy relationships. In fact, 1/3 of abused children go on to abuse their own children later in life.
