Children who are abused often struggle later with serious adjustment problems, including depression and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. They also have an increased rate of suicide attempts, perhaps due in part to the fact that they are more at risk for problems with alcohol and drugs as they mature. Another devastating consequence is that abused children are more likely to become involved in unhealthy relationships in adulthood. They have not had positive relationship models and don't know how to form healthy relationships. In fact, 1/3 of abused children go on to abuse their own children later in life.

Young children tend to overestimate their capabilities, so Mirana is most likely to say she did great after each rehearsal of the play. With young children it is important to provide positive feedback and foster healthy self-esteem. Young children's self-image is largely based on their perceptions of their parents' judgments of them. Mirana's parents should be unconditional in their love and support of her and avoid making comparisons. They should pay attention when she talks about the play and show that they are interested. They should reward her progress from rehearsal to rehearsal rather than waiting until the actual performance to reward her efforts. If she makes mistakes, they should tell her that mistakes provide valuable lessons. They can encourage her in further progress rather than brooding over mistakes. They might point out to her that performing in a play for the first time can be a bit scary and she should be commended for taking a risk. Finally, it would be good to mention to Mirana that all children (and actors) have strengths and weaknesses and we can expect mistakes in performance situations.

A boy in the first grade will most likely draw a picture that shows his features and characteristics in very literal and concrete terms. For example, he is likely to draw his eye color, hair color, and hair length. He may draw an overinflated image of his strength and describe unrealistic abilities. It is unlikely he will draw or tell what he likes and dislikes, his personality traits, or descriptions of others' perceptions of him. After age three, children have a basic understanding of their own feelings, so the young boy may draw a smiley or sad face to indicate his current feelings. Overall, we can expect the boy's drawing to be rather disconnected and compartmentalized. He will probably not integrate the various aspects of his self-concept. We are not likely to see integration of his physical characteristics with his thoughts or emotions.
