E; The oldest fossils (3.8 billion years old) are very simple and are presumed to be heterotrophic prokaryotes. Fossil stomatolites dating from 3.6 billion years ago resemble deposits left by modern cyanobacteria, also prokaryotes. All the other choices list eukaryotic organisms, which appeared over a billion years later.
