Bicoid, a 55-kDa protein, was the first Drosophila morphogen to be characterized. Although bicoid mRNA is localized strictly to the anterior tip of the oocyte and early embryo, Bicoid protein can be detected, in progressively decreasing concentrations, in more posterior positions along the length of the embryo. In vivo, Bicoid is rapidly degraded, with an estimated half-life of less than 30 minutes. Why is this instability of Bicoid protein necessary to establishment of a physiologically important gradient of this morphogen?
