On the playground the children discover a small abandoned bird's nest on the ground under a tree.  They come running to you saying, "Look we found a bird's nest"?  An appropriate open ended question to stimulate their thinking might be:
A) "How do you think it got there"?
B) "What shape is the nest"?
C) "Do you think the nest is big or small"?
D) "Do you like touching the nest"?
