There are several causes of increased antibiotic resistance in biofilms. These include decreased permeability of antibiotics due to the exo-polysaccharide matrix produced by the biofilm members. Efflux pumps also play a major role. In E. coli, genes encoding the AcrAB-To1C efflux pump are upregulated when cells enter biofilm growth. Pseudomonas aeruginosa encodes several multidrug efflux pumps that are more active when cells grow in an attached state.
