Direct microscopic examination of urine may indicate the presence of abnormal numbers of bacteria in the urine. Also, a Gram stain may be done on urine samples to identify the morphology of potential urinary tract pathogens. Blood agar can be useful for initial isolation. Selective and differential enteric media such as eosin-methylene blue agar permit the initial differentiation of lactose fermenters from non-lactose fermenters while inhibiting the growth of gram-positives. Urine cultures can be done quantitatively by counting colonies on either blood agar or a selective and differential growth medium.
